Before it’s Too Late, What You Need to Know About Your Emotional Health?

V.G. Siddhartha, MD of CCD, committed suicide. Many others especially students and entrepreneurs are also committing suicide every year. They are not as vulnerable as poor farmers in the village deprived of all resources and commits suicide due to the hardship of existence.

Many people commit suicide as they are not able to deal with the vagaries of life, be it a failure, high debt, inability to manage difficult situations, lack family support, etc.

It’s not about money or physical health. It is about mental and emotional health. It is about wellbeing. It is part of overall mental health.

We as a society have failed to recognise this very important aspect of health. We are so obsessed with exterior health like physique, looks, and success like financial success, an educational success that we have ignored the internal aspect of health and life.

Our ability to handle our downtime is very critical. Managing our lows is an important life skill. We celebrate success but look down failures.

Here is a list of things you should do when you feel emotionally drained and feeling low.

Early Signs of Emotional Health Issues:

  • Eating or sleeping too much or too little
  • Pulling away from people and usual activities
  • Having low or no energy
  • Feeling numb or like nothing matters
  • Feeling helpless or hopeless
  • Smoking, drinking or using drugs more than usual
  • Feeling unusually confused, forgetful, on edge, angry, upset, worried, or scared
  • Yelling or fighting with family and friends
  • Experiencing severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships
  • Having persistent thoughts and memories you can’t get out of your head
  • Thinking of harming yourself or others
  • Inability to perform daily tasks like taking care of your kids or getting to work or school

Emotionally healthy people are aware of their emotions. They can deal with them, whether they are positive or negative. Emotionally healthy people still feel stress, anger, and sadness. But they know how to manage their negative feelings. They can tell when a problem is more than they can handle on their own. They also know when to seek help from their doctor.

Here are some of the ways people with emotional down phase can turn around and recapture their lives.

Keep learning new things. This takes your mind away from down feelings. It opens up the mind and creates new opportunities.

Talk it out. Share your feelings with friends, family members spouse whosoever. This will ease your burden.
